Police Detect Over 160 Mobile Phones in Gurgaon Jail

The Gurgaon Police has seized 160 cell phones from the inmates of the Bhondsi jail here, Police Commissioner Navdeep Singh Virk said on Monday.Bhondsi police have booked five inmates of Bhondsi jail on charge of using mobile phones illegally in the prison premises.As many as 11 cell phones and a few SIM cards have been seized in the last two days, a senior official said.”We detected 160 mobile phones working in the Bhondsi jail and informed authorities there last week. During the subsequent search operations, some cell phones and SIMs were seized,” Gurgaon Police Commissioner Navdeep Singh Virk said.He said a large number of Bhondsi jail inmates were illegally using mobile phones, including convicts and undertrials in cases of murder, attempt to murder, robbery, kidnapping and frauds.”We collected information on mobile phone use through technical evidences, informers, information provided by inmates during production warrant and other sources,” Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Rajesh Kumar told IANS.

Kulbir Singh, superintendent of Bhondsi Jail, said the list of 160 criminals possibly using mobile phones from jail premises was handed over by Gurgaon police.”Some inmates suspected of using cell phones have since been released after grant of bail by courts or completion of their jail terms,” the jail official said.”The records of SIM cards do not match with the inmates’ records. It is possible a few names on the list belong to villagers living close to the jail,” he said.”As many as 11 mobile phones and few SIM have been seized in the last two days and handed over to police. We are investigating,” Kulbir Singh said.
